The Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) holds a new edition of its practical artificial-intelligence workshop for lawyers on 6 November 2026, within its CiberDRET programme, in hybrid format: in person in Room 5 of its Training Centre (Carrer Mallorca 281, Barcelona) or online via Zoom, from 9:30 to 13:45. The session is taught by Alejandro Castellano, an artificial-intelligence instructor. The price is 30 euros for ICAB members and associated persons, and 60 euros for non-members.

Practical training, not theory

The practical-workshop approach is the key to the proposal. AI training for jurists has multiplied over the past two years, but much of it stays at the outreach level: what a language model is, what risks it poses, what the European regulation says. Practical workshops respond to the demand the adoption data have laid bare: with almost eight in ten lawyers already using some form of AI, what is missing is training in the concrete, supervised use of the tools in daily work.

The ICAB's CiberDRET programme has for years articulated technology training for Barcelona's legal profession, and its commitment to a hybrid format eases access for lawyers from any district, who can follow the session via Zoom, without giving up the in-person option for those who prefer the classroom.

The training gap the data denounce

The need is not rhetorical. The White Paper on Artificial Intelligence and the Legal Profession, promoted by the General Council of Spanish Lawyers, recorded that almost two in three lawyers using AI admitted having no training in these tools. The generational gap worsens the problem: according to the study promoted by Grupo Tirant, 36% of those over 54 do not use AI, versus 9.5% of those under 35.

That combination — majority use, minority training — explains much of the trouble that has already reached the courts, with sanctions on lawyers who filed submissions containing AI-invented case law without verification. Practical training with human control at its core is the answer bars and councils are articulating, as Instruction 2/2026 of the General Council of the Judiciary on judges' use of AI also shows.

What a good legal AI workshop should have

When choosing among the available offer, firms consulted by this publication usually value four things: exercises built on real cases from Spanish practice, a programme including source-verification protocols, data-protection and professional-secrecy content with practical examples, and an internal AI-use policy template attendees can apply back at the firm. Programmes meeting those four points are the ones that actually close the gap the surveys describe.

The ICAB workshop's price — 30 euros for members — also places it among the season's most accessible options, which makes it easier to send the youngest staff, often the ones using the tools daily without formal training.

The regulatory context making training urgent

With the European AI Regulation applying its transparency obligations since August and the requirements for high-risk systems in the administration of justice set for December 2027, training stops being an extracurricular extra and becomes part of compliance. Firms documenting their teams' training today will be better positioned when clients and insurers start asking about it.

An AI training calendar filling up

The ICAB workshop joins a growing offer: bar conferences like the ReICAZ one in Zaragoza, specialisation courses from other bars and university postgraduate programmes. For lawyers choosing, the useful criterion is the same as for software: supervised practice, verifiable sources and real cases before general theory.
