Clio-vLex, anatomy of a legaltech unicorn: Clio Work and Clio Manage land in Spain

Derecho Practico reconstructs the birth of the Clio-vLex legaltech giant: 88% of small Spanish firms already use AI, says its new report.

Derecho Practico's 'En territorio' format has reconstructed how one of the biggest operations in legal technology was born and is growing: the union of Clio and vLex, the combination that created a unicorn in the legal tech industry with Barcelona as one of its European nodes.

The launch: Clio Work and Clio Manage

The chosen setting was the Clio Elevate event, held on 30 September in Madrid, where the company officially launched Clio Work and Clio Manage for the Spanish market, available under the vLex part of Clio brand. Clio Manage is a cloud-based practice management software with AI, aimed at organising cases and collaborating with clients from a single place. Clio Work is the environment for legal work proper (document drafting, case law research and preparation of court filings) supported by vLex's verified legal data. Together, both products allow a firm to manage its complete activity, from the business side to the legal work, in one system, a possibility Spanish firms had not had until now, according to the company.

The figure that conditions the market: 88% already use AI

Alongside the launch, Clio presented the report 'Legal perspectives in Spain for independent lawyers and small firms', with a headline that sets the sector's commercial conversation: 88% of small firms in Spain already use artificial intelligence. The report adds that sector-specific tools deliver better results than generic ones: those using specialised AI register faster client responses, higher contact conversion rates and higher perceived added value compared with those relying on tools not designed for legal work.

The figure must be read with its context (it is a vendor's report interested in the conclusion), but it fits what we observe daily in the sector: the question is no longer whether a small firm uses AI, but which tool it uses, with what controls and with what real impact on the bottom line, a debate we treat in depth in our legal AI section.

Three generations of legaltech in one operation

The Derecho Practico episode brings together Jack Newton, CEO and founder of Clio; Lluis Faus, founder of vLex and now Strategic Advisor and Interim Chief Content Officer at Clio; and Ferran Sala, General Manager for Spain. The conversation reconstructs the origins of both companies and the logic of the union: Clio's management and practice layer on top of vLex's legal content and AI trained on verified data, with multijurisdictional coverage.

For the Spanish market, the operation has an additional reading: vLex was one of the first Spanish legaltechs with global projection, and its integration consolidates Barcelona as one of the sector's European nodes, in line with the news we follow in legal AI and the funding rounds we review in legaltech startups, such as Harvey and Legora: 1.1 billion in one month.

What to watch from now on

The landing of Clio Work and Clio Manage intensifies competition for the small Spanish firm, the segment where national players also operate and where differentiation will be fought on three fronts: quality and coverage of legal content, integration with daily practice (Lexnet, email, case management) and compliance with the European AI Act. The promise of "verified legal data" as the basis of automated drafting will, moreover, be an argument that courts and professional bodies will examine with a magnifying glass.
