Spain's review of anti-money-laundering rules and the new European framework share a direction: greater consistency and more coordinated supervision. Enrique Remón and Rocío Rodríguez Perchín of CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo examine that process in an El Confidencial opinion article.

Two levels to distinguish

The authors place Royal Decree 813/2026, published on 8 October, within Spain's adaptation. They identify changes concerning due diligence, financial sanctions and obligations for foundations and associations.

The European package expands and revises categories of obliged entities. The article mentions cryptoassets, crowdfunding and certain football-related activities, alongside AMLA's role in supervising high-risk entities and coordinating national authorities.

The authors identify 10 July 2027 as the date when the European reform's measures become applicable. This should not be read as postponing every Spanish obligation until then: the article distinguishes national developments from the European timetable.

This text summarises their analysis and does not replace examination of each rule and its transitional provisions for a particular obliged entity. Regulatory statements are attributed to the cited opinion article.
