Legal ops: what legal operations does and why it is the fastest-growing career path for lawyers
Vendor management, budgets, technology and processes: the lawyer who understands the business of law has a growing market outside traditional practice.

Legal ops, legal operations, legal department management: the name varies, but the function is the same and it appears in more and more job ads. It means applying business management to legal work: budgets, selection of external firms, technology, processes and measurement. For a lawyer who wants to step away from daily practice without leaving the sector, it is today the path with the most traction. This guide explains what it is, what it demands and how to get in.
What a legal ops professional actually does
The core of the role has four legs. The first is financial: budgeting the year's legal spend, controlling deviations and negotiating fees, fixed-price quotes and provider panels with external firms. The second is technological: choosing, implementing and maintaining the department's tools, from the matter management system to document-review AI. The third is process: documenting how each matter comes in, gets assigned and gets closed, and removing bottlenecks. The fourth is data: turning activity into metrics that management understands.
CLOC (Corporate Legal Operations Consortium), the international reference in the field, summarises the function in twelve competencies ranging from knowledge management to service design. In Spain the role is less institutionalised, but large corporate legal departments already have it, with or without the title.
Why it is growing now
Three forces push the role. Cost pressure on legal departments, which must justify every euro like any other area. The arrival of generative AI, which requires someone with legal judgement to decide what to buy, what to automate and what not to. And the professionalisation of in-house departments, which are no longer a stepping stone towards a law firm but a career in themselves, as we covered in the guide to the in-house career: the move to the corporate legal department.
The visible result is a market hiring hybrid profiles: lawyers who understand processes and numbers, and managers who understand legal work. Deloitte Legal's openings for its Legal Operate line, dedicated precisely to managed legal operations services, are a sign of the times.
Who gets in and how to prepare
The natural profile is a lawyer with three to eight years of experience in a company or in a firm with management exposure: billing, team coordination, client contact. Those entering from pure management (projects, operations, finance) need legal credibility, usually gained through specific training in contracting and compliance.
Practical preparation comes down to four demonstrable skills: fluent use of spreadsheets and budgets, real experience selecting or coordinating providers, knowledge of the tools on the market and data vocabulary. Familiarity with AI-assisted workflows, such as AI contract review with human control, has become a direct differentiator in interviews.
Expectations and where to look
Pay varies widely with company size, but as a general reference it sits above the average salary of a senior associate at mid-size firms and below the big international firms; the figures in our survey of lawyer salaries in Spain provide a basis for comparison. Offers appear on the general job portals under the labels legal operations, legal project manager or legal business partner, and increasingly in the daily selections of legal job offers we verify at this publication.
For anyone weighing the move, the practical advice is not to wait for the perfect opening: legal ops responsibilities can start being assumed in your current team, managing a practice area's budget or rolling out a tool, and turning that experience into the first entry on the CV.
