Where to look for legal jobs in Spain: bar job boards, firm career sites and portals that actually work

The best offers are not always on the generalist portals. We review the channels concentrating the sector's real offers and how to organise the search so none slips by.

Looking for a job as a lawyer is not the same as looking for a job, period. The sector has its own channels, many offers never reach the big portals and a relevant part of the market moves through bar associations, specialised job boards and firms' own websites. This guide organises the channels that actually concentrate real offers and how to combine them.

Bar association job boards

The most undervalued channel. Bar associations run job boards with offers from local and mid-size firms that publish nowhere else, especially outside Madrid and Barcelona. Many require membership (or pre-membership) of that bar, so it is worth signing up for the job board of the bar where you want to practise, not only your own. We analysed this ecosystem in Bar association job boards and the ICAB employment fair.

Firms' career sites

The big firms publish their vacancies first (and sometimes only) on their own careers pages: ECIJA, the legal Big Four, international firms with a Spanish office and reference national firms all run active career portals. An effective strategy is to list your 15 or 20 target firms and review their sites weekly. In our daily selection we verify precisely those links, such as the Real Estate position ECIJA keeps open in Madrid.

Recruitment consultancies

For experienced profiles, legal-specialised recruiters (Morgan Philips, Michael Page and others) move much of the in-house and firm market for three-plus years of experience. Registering with a specialised consultant and keeping the relationship active is more productive than sending a CV to every advert.

Portals and aggregators

Generalist portals and aggregators (such as Empleo24, which gathers offers from firms and companies) are useful as radar, but with two cautions: always check the publication date and enter through the company's original link to confirm the offer is still active. Portals carry expired offers.

The own channel: the professional network

The sector moves by contacts: former master's classmates, practising professors, young lawyer associations, bar events. A significant share of mid-size firm hires is never publicly advertised. Keeping the network active (and letting it know you are looking) is as important as any portal.

A note on social-media offers

Small firms increasingly advertise vacancies on LinkedIn and other social channels. They work as a complement, but the same cautions as with aggregators apply: verify that the offer exists on the firm's website or a formal channel before sending personal documentation, and be wary of adverts asking for sensitive data over messaging or promising processes without an interview.

How to organise yourself

  1. Alerts, not searches. Set keyword alerts on the chosen channels and review once a day, not twenty times.
  2. A minimal register. Company, position, link, sending date and status of each application. Without a register, the search falls into disorder within two weeks.
  3. CV adapted by area. A CV for labour and one for commercial are not the same document.
  4. The daily selection as a thermometer. Even if no specific offer fits, reading the daily selections tells you which areas and cities are hiring, information that guides strategy. Here is today's verified selection.

For those starting out

The first job has its own rules: paralegal and legal assistant positions are a real entry door, admission-master placements are the best calling card, and the guide to job offers for lawyers in Madrid concentrates the most active market. To calibrate salary expectations, the report on lawyers' salaries in Spain gives figures by experience and area.
