Huesca hosts the 26th Civil Liability and Insurance Lawyers Congress from 5 to 7 November

The Spanish Association of Lawyers Specialising in Civil Liability and Insurance holds its 26th National Congress on 5, 6 and 7 November 2026 in Huesca. It is the 26th edition of this association of specialists' annual meeting.

Why it matters to firms

Civil liability and insurance can be part of the daily work of large and small firms: claims for road accidents, medical, professional or product liability, coverage disputed with insurers. It is also an area where recent procedural reforms have a direct effect.

The impact of ADR

Since April 2025, Organic Law 1/2025 requires an appropriate dispute resolution method to be attempted before suing in most civil matters. If a damages claim is civil and not among the law's exceptions, this prior stage applies to it. The 30-day response periods, proof of the attempt and the effects on costs are practical matters worth mastering. We explain them in our guide to the precondition for suing.

Duty-solicitor scheme and prior negotiation

For those who handle these matters under the duty-solicitor scheme, Royal Decree 824/2026 has just added compensation for prior negotiation activity, at 125% of the module when there is an agreement and €30 when there is not.

How to make the most of the congress

1. Review the programme before arriving and mark the sessions that most affect your practice.
2. Bring real cases to mind: specialist congresses are an opportunity to compare views with colleagues who litigate the same matters.
3. Note the case law cited and check it afterwards in CENDOJ before using it in a filing. It is always good practice, and more so since courts sanction non-existent citations, as we report in our analysis of the sanctions for fake case law generated by AI.
4. Arrange cover for the firm during those three days, especially if you practise alone.

Training as a duty

The Organic Law on the Right of Defence links the quality of legal assistance to professionals' continuing and specialised training. Congresses of specialist associations are one of the most direct ways to meet that duty in a specific field.
