The 14th National Congress of the Spanish Legal Profession has a date: Toledo, 19 to 22 October 2027

The General Council of the Spanish Legal Profession announced on 7 October 2026 the dates of its 14th National Congress. It will take place from 19 to 22 October 2027 in Toledo, at the El Greco Congress Centre, which will host all the activities, including the cultural and networking programme.

With the announcement, the institution has set out the calendar, the motto and the main lines of the programme. The previous congress, the 13th, was held in Tarragona four years earlier.

The motto and the themes

The motto chosen is "Building the future of the legal profession together". According to the General Council, the programme will revolve around five strands:

1. Technological transformation and artificial intelligence.
2. Free legal aid and its impact on the profession.
3. New tools for professional practice.
4. The main regulatory and ethical challenges.
5. The sector's adaptation to social and economic change.

AI coming first is no surprise. In the last two years, European regulation has changed its timetable and Spanish courts have started to sanction filings with citations invented by generative tools. Free legal aid is the other major topic of the profession. The Organic Law on the Right of Defence describes the duty-solicitor scheme as an essential pillar of the system, as we explain in our summary of the Organic Law on the Right of Defence.

A format for building your own itinerary

The General Council describes a format based on papers, plenary lectures and practical workshops organised by thematic areas. Sessions will run simultaneously, so each attendee can choose according to their interests and professional practice.

The institution presents the congress as open to the whole Spanish legal profession and with a participatory format, which seeks to involve professionals in the debates and proposals.

What is still unknown

At the date of this article, the General Council had not published:

• The registration fees or deadlines.
• The detailed programme with speakers and timetables.
• The details of the cultural and networking programme, which will be announced in the coming months.

Why it is worth saving the date

The national congresses of the legal profession bring together bar associations, regional councils and professionals from across the country.

For a small firm or a lawyer who practises on their own, it is also an opportunity for concentrated training and for contact with colleagues from other specialities and regions. With a year to spare, it is a good time to:

• Save the date in your diary and plan cover for your matters during those days.
• Ask your bar association whether it organises travel or support for members.
• Follow the calls for papers or participation, if they open.

Training also has legal backing. Article 8 of the Organic Law on the Right of Defence links the quality of legal assistance to the continuing and specialised training of professionals. A congress with practical workshops on tools, ethics and free legal aid fits that obligation, and allows knowledge that changes quickly, such as that affecting the use of artificial intelligence at the firm, to be updated in a few days.

Before Toledo there are other opportunities to train and get to know tools. The nearest is the Legal Tech Expo 2026, on 18 and 19 November at IFEMA Madrid, with free access for professionals.
