The Illustrious Madrid Bar Association holds on Tuesday 27 October 2026, at 13:00, a practical workshop with a title that sums up its purpose: "Dialogue between the first-instance courts and the legal profession". It is organised by the Bar Association's Legal Profession Defence Department and will take place in the ICAM Assembly Hall, Calle Serrano 9, first floor.
According to the Bar Association's page, the workshop is free and in person only, and registration is through the ICAM's registration area.
What will be discussed
The description published by the ICAM announces a practical session open to dialogue, with three aims:
- Review the problems detected in how the first-instance courts work.
- Analyse the main incidents lawyers meet in their daily practice, including doubts about the new judicial organisation.
- Present the actions of the Legal Profession Defence Department to support members.
Attendees will be able to ask questions and share the difficulties of their daily work.
Who takes part
According to the ICAM programme:
| Participant | Role |
|---|---|
| Javier Mata, ICAM deputy dean | Introduces the session |
| Cristina Ruiz Iglesias, court clerk (letrada de la Administración de Justicia) | Director of the Common Processing Service of the Parla First-Instance Court |
| Guillermina Córcoles Gomariz and Beatriz Hernández del Castillo | ICAM Legal Profession Defence Department |
The presence of a clerk who runs a common processing service lets doubts be put to someone who works inside the new organisation, and not only discussed among lawyers.

Why it matters
The rollout of the first-instance courts has changed how lawyers deal with the courts: new common services, new units and new ways of processing. We argued in an editorial that their success depends on the court office more than the name, and this workshop goes in that direction: it is the office that sits down to talk with the legal profession. You can read our position in the editorial "The first-instance courts will succeed or fail on the court office".
An unusual format
Unlike the classic scheme of a talk followed by questions, this workshop is announced as a dialogue in which attendees set out their problems and listen to someone who works inside a first-instance court. For lawyers who practise alone or in a small firm, without a department that centralises incidents with the courts, it is a useful chance to check whether what happens to them is an isolated case or something that repeats.
It also serves to learn about the work of the Legal Profession Defence Department, the bar route to turn to when a problem with a court affects professional practice. The Organic Law on the Right of Defence also deals with bar protection, as we explain in the summary of the Organic Law on the Right of Defence.
How to prepare
- Note the specific incidents you have met: notifications, hearing dates, access to files, service at the common services.
- Bring practical questions, which are the ones best answered in a dialogue format.
- Learn about the Bar Association's resources for defending the profession, which the workshop will also present.
Other ICAM dates
The same week, on the 29th and 30th, the Bar Association holds its 1st Congress on Public Procurement. More dates in the Events agenda.
